See my article here for 15 tips on kayak fishing with dogs.

But before taking out the dog for this exciting paddling, there are certain things you will need to take care of first.

Getting comfortable with the water

Making the dog get comfortable with water is the first important thing to do. To know if the dog loves to play with water, take him out on the beach and observe his reaction.

If the dog shows no sign of discomfort or uneasiness, then he is good to go.

Introducing Kayak to the dog

Before heading to the water, let the dog get in the Kayak. It is advisable to take it slow while starting it off.

Instead of hasting straight into the deeper area of the river, start paddling slowly in the shallow water.

And if the dog tends to panic or behave weirdly in a way than it is not a great idea to take him for kayaking.

Training

Training the dog for kayaking is essential. If the dog does not understand some basic commands like “come,” “sit,” or “stay,” then it could be a challenge for clear communication between you and your dog.

Making your canine company feel relaxed, and knowing the basics of this adventurous ride is crucial.

Tips to keep in mind

  • For safety hazards never tie the dog on the Kayak. If the Kayak capsizes, it could be dangerous for both.
  • If paddling in saltwater, carry a bowl of freshwater. You must remember to keep the dog hydrated. Avoid making it drink the seawater as it could make them thirstier.
  • Do not take a dog for kayaking if it is old or has health issues such as Arthritis. A dog having Arthritis problems will not be able to brace themselves against waves and may lose balance on the Kayak. Coldwater and air are not suitable for dogs with this illness. Dog with hearing and vision disabilities can also be a problem for a smooth ride.
  • To avoid scratching on the boat, trim the toenails of your dog, or make the dog sit on a carpet or a rubber mat.

Gear for dogs

    Dog lifejacket

There are dogs lifejackets designed exclusively for their safety and readily available in pet stores.

No matter how smart the dogs swim, they should be equipped with this safety gear.

Make sure the vest is appropriately fit on its body to avoid any loose knot, letting it slip off.

    Harness

A harness can help pull the dog out of the water. A dog’s lifejacket has a handle as it is but having a harness is an extra safety measure.

    Dog treats

Sometimes dog treats can be convenient; the favorite snack will help get the attention of the dog.

    First Aid Kit

Carry peroxide or Neosporin for emergencies.

The best suggestion is that the dog should be well- trained and mannered. Carry some essentials for keeping the dog happy, comfortable, and healthy.

Before heading the dog to Kayak, make sure to equip them well and stick by the dog.
